Description

Not to be confused with bee balm, Melissa officinali (or Lemon Balm) is native to Southern Europe and the Mediterranean region, and is known for attracting bees; a fact that often results in confusion with Bee Balm. Lemon balm can be found used in the flavoring of ice cream and herbal teas, both of the hot and iced varieties, and is usually found in a combination with other herbs such as spearmint, or paired with fruit dishes and candies. Some lore also holds that the leaves can be crushed and rubbed on the skin as a repellant for mosquitoes. Modern herbalists find that it also has natural antibacterial properties, and that the teas made with Lemon Balm can be used as a sedative or calming agent. It has also long been used in strengthening the immune system, aiding with the symptoms of cold and flu, as well as in the reduction of fevers. As one might imagine from the strengthening of the immune system, it can also be used as a general preventative aid in remaining free of infection and disease. Some herbalists also claim that Lemon Balm is useful in treating nerve disorders, including those that involve fainting, hysteria, and migraine headaches. This is a 1 oz packet of cut Lemon Balm.
